Amethyst is quartz that took on color — pale lavender through to a deep violet that reads almost black indoors. Every piece in this collection sets it into a bracelet, in one of three ways: round beads strung on cord, flat cabochons set into a frame, or uncut stones wrapped in 14K gold-filled wire.

Three ways it is set

  • Bead bracelets are the plainest reading. Round or faceted amethyst strung end to end, with nothing in front of the stone.
  • Cabochons are cut flat and polished, then set into metal — a leaf, a gourd, a star, a teardrop. These show the stone as a surface rather than as a bead.
  • Gold-filled wire wraps the stone with no setting at all, so the piece stays light and the amethyst sits close to the wrist.

Most of this collection is a bead or a cabochon. A few strands combine amethyst with rose quartz or strawberry quartz in the same bracelet.

Which shade to choose

Pale amethyst reads closer to clear quartz in daylight. Deep amethyst looks nearly black indoors and only shows its purple in sun. If you want the color to carry across a room, go darker. If you want the stone to catch light, go lighter.

What it is worn for

The name comes from the Greek for not intoxicated, and the old association is with a clear head — sober thinking, steady attention. Amethyst is also the stone most often tied to the third eye and the crown. What each chakra governs is set out in full elsewhere.

Wearing it

Amethyst is quartz, so it takes a polish well and holds its color. Keep it out of long sun and away from perfume, and it will keep both.

Pick by how you want to see the stone — beads for something to turn in your fingers, a cabochon for a face of color on the wrist.
