Black tourmaline has a property almost no other stone on this list has: warm it and it holds an electric charge. That is where the name comes from — the old Singhalese traders called it turmali, the mixed stone, because it arrived in so many colors. Black is the most common of them, and the one that is almost never faked.

Why it is usually left rough

  • Raw pendant — the stone is left as it broke, so the striations run the full length of the piece. Tourmaline forms in long, grooved columns, and polishing one down to a bead loses most of what it does.
  • Cut beads — smooth and matte, in a strand that reads almost like graphite.
  • Paired with rutilated quartz — gold needles inside clear quartz, next to a black column.

Three pieces here, and only one of them is a bead strand. That ratio is typical: this is a stone that is usually worn in the form it came out of the ground.

Five elements, one wrap

The five-element wrap in this collection is the traditional reading — the black stone is the piece that holds the others in place rather than carrying the theme on its own. How the feng shui pieces are put together is set out there.

Wearing it

Tourmaline is hard but not tough — it will chip along the column before it scratches. Keep the raw pieces away from hard surfaces.

Choose the raw form if you want the stone as it broke, the bead if you want it matte and quiet.
