Moonstone

Moonstone is the only stone in this collection that changes when you move it. A sheet of light rolls across the surface as the stone turns — an effect that comes from the way light travels between the thin layers inside it. Two stones cut from the same rough can show it, or show nothing at all.

The colors

  • White moonstone is the classic. The glow sits low and cool against the skin.
  • Grey moonstone is the most common here, and the one the light shows against most clearly.
  • Blue-flash moonstone holds a blue that appears only at certain angles.
  • Pale green and creamy blue are the softer end, closer to jade and aquamarine in the hand.
  • Pink moonstone is the warmest shade, and the rarest one cut here.

Cut matters more than size

Moonstone does not want a setting. Almost every piece here is a plain bead or a simple focal, because a bezel would cover the surface the stone is worn for. Where it is cut with something else — kyanite in the clover piece, aquamarine in the double-wraps, citrine in the 8mm pair — the second stone is there to give the glow something to sit against.

It is also a stone that lives at the calm end of the shop. The peace pieces are where most of it appears.

Wearing it

Moonstone is softer than quartz. Keep it away from harder stones and take it off before anything that scratches. The glow reads best in indirect light, not in full sun.

Choose by the color of the flash you want, not the size of the bead — the effect does not scale with the stone.
