Gathering, in this collection, is done with a figure rather than a stone. Pixiu appears on more than half the pieces here — the winged guardian that is said to take in rather than give out — and the rest are the shapes that hold: coin charms, fortune bags, and gourds.

The forms

  • Pixiu — strung alone, in obsidian, citrine, jade, garnet, or tiger's eye. The material changes the reading; the figure does not.
  • Coin charms and ropes — a coin shape threaded on cord, or a coin hung at the clasp.
  • Fortune bags — the tied pouch, cut as a pendant or as a charm.
  • Gourds — the shape that holds, worn as a bead or as a pendant.

The figure carries it

What is unusual here is how little the material matters. The same pixiu is cut in black obsidian, in yellow citrine, in green jade — and the intent travels with the shape, not with the stone. That is why these pieces are grouped the way they are rather than by material.

The material still does something. Obsidian makes the piece disappear; citrine makes it warm; jade makes it quiet.

Choosing

Start with the figure, then pick the stone you want to see on your wrist. If you have no preference, obsidian and citrine are the two ends — one swallows light, one throws it.

The pixiu pieces on their own are set out separately.
