A thangka is a painting on cloth, made to be hung — usually large, usually rolled for travel, always built around a figure. The pieces in this collection are the same painting brought down to pendant size, which changes what you do with it: it is worn rather than hung, and it faces the body rather than the room.

At pendant size

  • Hand-painted, open — the figure is painted on the surface and left unframed, so the brushwork is the whole piece.
  • Wood-framed — a painted figure set into a wooden frame, which protects the edge and reads more like an object than an image.
  • Cylindrical — painted around a tube, so the figure continues as the piece turns.
  • Titanium steel — the smallest of the group, and the only one that can be worn in water.

What is lost, and what is not

At this size the detail of a full thangka is gone. What survives is the figure itself — the posture, the color, the object held in the hand — which is the part doing the work anyway.

Four of the pieces here are ghau boxes with a painted face rather than a painted interior. How a ghau is worn covers that side of it.

Choosing

Pick by finish. The open painted pieces are the most detailed and the most delicate; the framed and steel versions are the ones to wear daily.
