Mal de ojo

The evil eye is the one form in this collection meant to be seen. Everything else is worn close, under a sleeve, or facing the body. These face outward, and they are supposed to.

Two traditions, one idea

  • The eye — the blue glass eye that looks back at whoever is looking. It comes out of the eastern Mediterranean and Anatolia, and it is worn as an answer rather than as a shield.
  • The hamsa — the open hand, from the same region and from North African Jewish tradition as well. Hand and eye appear together on one of the pieces here.

Both are older than any of the Tibetan material in this shop. They are grouped together because they do the same job in two different visual languages.

Three pieces

  • Hamsa evil eye on red cord — hand and eye on a single cord piece.
  • Peridot evil eye — the eye cut in green stone rather than in glass.
  • Turquoise evil eye leather wrap — the eye set on a leather band, the heaviest of the three.

Choosing

Take the cord if you want it light. Take the leather wrap if you want it to stay put. Either way, wear it on the side you do not look at — that is the form.

How protection is carried in this shop sets out the other two ways.
