Granate

Garnet is named for the pomegranate — granatum, the seed — and the name holds up the moment you see a strand. The stones sit like a row of seeds, deep red, each one slightly different from the next.

The red, and how it is cut

  • Plain rounds read darkest, almost wine at a distance.
  • Faceted garnet turns the color up. The flat cuts send light back, so the red looks brighter than a round bead of the same depth.
  • Triple-wrap and double-strand pieces use more stone and sit heavier on the wrist.

Garnet is not the stone you reach for if you want something bright. It is the one that stays red indoors, in low light, and in photographs — which is why it appears in so many of the pieces here.

Always in company

Almost none of the garnet in this collection travels alone. It is strung with a pixiu, a coin charm, a gourd, or white and Hetian jade — the shapes that carry fortune and keeping. The pairing is the point: garnet supplies the color and the weight, the companion carries the intent.

The gourd pieces are the clearest example, where the garnet is strung around the shape rather than beside it.

Wearing it

Garnet takes a polish well and holds it. It is hard enough for daily wear, and the color does not fade.

Choose by cut more than by size. A faceted garnet the same width as a plain round will look like a different stone.
