Cuentas de Mala de Piedras Preciosas

Most malas are wood. The four here are not — they are strung in stone, which changes two things at once: the weight, and the temperature.

What a stone mala feels like

A gemstone bead is heavier than a wooden bead of the same size, and it does not warm to the hand the way wood does. The strand sits on the wrist rather than moving with it, and a round takes slightly longer because the beads are denser and the strand falls straighter.

None of that is a drawback. It is why some people count with stone and others will not.

The pieces here

  • Turquoise wraps — two of the four, both full-length. The blue reads evenly down a long strand, with no bead standing out.
  • Clear quartz with sandalwood — one strand alternating stone and wood, so half the beads warm and half stay cool.
  • Rosewood with a lotus tassel — wrist-length rather than a full 108, and the only piece here that is meant to stay on.

Choosing

If you count with your mala and want it to stay put, stone is the better answer. If you want it to warm in the hand and carry a scent, wood is. The strand that mixes both is the compromise, and the one most people choose first.

The turquoise collection has the same stone in shorter lengths.
