Peace, in this collection, is blue and white and grey — and it is also wood. The pieces grouped here run from aquamarine and moonstone through white jade and amethyst, and then into sandalwood malas and the mantra strands that carry nothing but a line of six syllables.

What calm is made of here

  • Blue stones — aquamarine, blue tiger's eye, blue sandstone. The coolest reading on the wrist.
  • White and pale stones — white jade, white moonstone, pale green jade. These sit quietest against skin.
  • Grey and silvered stones — grey moonstone and silver moonstone hold their tone in low light, where the pale ones grey out.
  • Wood — sandalwood and liudao beads, plain or as a wrist mala. The only group here that is not a stone.

Calm is not one material

The pieces are not sorted by stone, because calm is not a stone. It is what you want the piece to do on the wrist: something that does not ask to be looked at, that sits under a sleeve, that you stop noticing after a week. A pale jade bead and a sandalwood mala arrive at the same place by different routes.

Several strands combine a stone with a mantra, which is the other way to carry it — something to hold rather than something to look at.

Choosing

For the coolest reading, take the blues. For the quietest, take the whites. For something to hold during practice, take the wood. The malas are where the last group lives.
